Openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook appeared to have tamed South Africa's feared attack, which includes pace pair Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel backed up by the experience of Makhaya Ntini and Jacques Kallis.Cook was fortunate to survive on 19 when a bottom edge attempting a pull off Kallis bounced wide of his stumps, but otherwise both batsmen looked comfortable despite a succession of bowling changes from South Africa captain Graeme Smith. The turning point came midway through the opening session when Middlesex left-hander Strauss, who had progressed to 44, was given lbw to Morkel by umpire Daryl Harper despite the full-length delivery pitching outside leg-stump.Just seven balls later South Africa claimed a more legitimate wicket with Steyn delivering a full-length, swinging delivery which cleaned up Michael Vaughan's stumps as he attempted to clip through midwicket.
